Contour and bronze have very different meaning. These words have been trending in beauty world for quite sometime now. But it hurts when I see that they use it interchangeably. Some beauty vloggers and bloggers alike can sometimes mislead readers and viewers when it comes to using similar products for different objective look. Bronzer sometimes used as contouring product and vice versa, which is a mistake. Especially to some beginners to makeup.
According to Webster, bronze means to give the appearance of bronze to <a bronzed sculpture>; also : tan (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bronze.
While Contour means an outline especially of a curving or irregular figure : shape; also : the line representing this. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/contour
While a bronzing powder may be use for contouring, the effect may be the opposite of what we are trying to achieve. To contour is to make a surface appears at certain shape. That's why the color shade must appear like a shadow. And that's why bronzing powder are not commendable on this as they have a glistening effect like tanning products have. To bronze to is make the skin like it has been under the sun, to give the appearance of a bronzy look.
You see, when bronzer is applied on your hands, notice that when you move it has a 3D effect. It glistens on the most elevated part. And contour shade when applied, color stays the same even when moving, like it is as if under the shade. That is why a contour is a matte finish.
Since bronzer has this glistening effect it cannot be use as contouring product as the effect is opposite. Rather than what we are trying to achieve of a slimmer face look we may appear to have a fuller face.
If contour is for shade, bronzer is for light. Contour helps in sculpting the face, bronzing helps in making the face tanner like bronze, glowing under the sun.
However, depending on the skin color and product texture, bronzer may work as contouring if it is MATTE. That is why contouring product has a matte finish because the effect must be of a natural shade. If the skin and the bronzer has the same color tone, the effect may be pleasing. Bronzer that is matte is not typically a bronzer as it opposed the effect of a bronzy look. That may be the reason why many are confused due to product branding.
